<image:title>About Me - Rachel-Jane</image:title>
<image:caption>I am a award winning theatre maker and director who works predominantly with community groups and also in educational contexts such as schools, colleges and prison classrooms. I care deeply about the communities I work within and always push the participants creatively. I am a huge believer that laughing and working together can create long lasting relationships and incredible work. Initially I trained with Fife College for Acting and Performance, then went onto to train at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on the Contemporary Performance Practice course. Since graduating I have went on to work with some of Scotlands leading companies & lead my own community drama ensemble and continue to work with incredible people.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Theatre - BUCKHIND PLAYERS</image:title>
<image:caption>Buckhind Players is a community drama ensemble set up two years ago over a coffee with a friend. It is unique and is based in the fiercely creative, under rated town of Buckhaven in Fife. Buckhind Players is made up of various members of the community from Buckhaven and further afield. We may be small but we pack a punch, in 2019 we put on our very own Pantomime, the first of its kind in over 10 years for the local community. We had massive success with over 900 people coming to see it from our area, this was a massive moment for us and very very special. This was the first time some of our community had seen panto, oh yes it was! We worked hard and professionally and the group has continued to work together since, you can keep up to date with our adventures over on the blog section!</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Theatre - Contact Point Finding Love on Lawrence Street</image:title>
<image:caption>Finding Love on Lawrence Street was a 8 week long process with a group of adults who have additional support needs and mental health issues. I was commissioned to do a piece of work in my community that would benefit those who lived there, I made a connection with Contact Point and we worked with their group in Fife. Over the eight weeks I guided the participants through a devising process and we created a spoof film of a dating show, titled Finding Love on Lawrence Street.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Theatre - CLOSE[NESS]</image:title>
<image:caption>CLOSE[NESS] was a site specific collaboration between myself and Ibrox resident Maggi. Maggi is an incredible woman who I had the privilege to work as part of a site specific piece I was creating. The enquiry was about the closeness of communities, how well do we know our neighbours and how do we keep that unique relationship alive in a ever growing culture towards social isolation. Maggi taught her neighbours English through gardening when they came to Glasgow as refugees and opened her home and her heart to create a welcoming home for them in Glasgow. I was privileged to be a part of that experience so we created a tour and interactive performance of Maggi’s home in a Glasgow Close, we then threw a party and shared a meal of foods from the countries that make up the close.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Theatre - Waiting For The Sun to Rise</image:title>
<image:caption>Waiting For The Sun to Rise was a collaboration between RCS, CPP students and the over 60’s community in Glasgow. We laughed as we taught each other iconic dances from our life time, from the cha cha slide to line dancing. We shared stories and tender moments all whilst documenting the sunrises we had seen over the course of our lives. Waiting For The Sun to Rise culminated in a dance performance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custodial Settings - TWAS THE NICHT BEFORE XMAS*ish</image:title>
<image:caption>Twas the night before Xmas*ish was a devised performance with a group of female students in custody. The group worked together for eight weeks to learn new skills and build their confidence. Some of the females in the group find socialising and working with other to be quite challenging so we worked gently and without pressure, if we made a show - great, if not, then we still had the process. We focused a lot on humour and slapstick comedy as it was an art form we all understood and connected with, we then worked together to write a blue print script and devised a Christmas show for the other residents within the hall they lived in. The group worked incredibly well together and this project will continue in to 2021.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custodial Settings - Passion Play Mixed gendered population drama group</image:title>
<image:caption>As part of my practice I pioneered a mixed gender drama group in one of Scotland’s largest prisons. Taking the male participants from one population and mixing them with the female participants from another on an eight week pilot project for a mixed drama class. Throughout the eight weeks we were tasked with responding to one of the Passion Plays - that go on across Edinburgh during the Easter period. We focused on the idea of the Last Supper, looking at how food and community often are the staples in our lives in which we can all connect despite our backgrounds. The group ran successfully and this project is looking to continue into 2021. I was also nominated for a Staff Innovation Award for Outstanding Delivery of Learning & Teaching for this project, as it was the first of its kind across Scotlands Prisons.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Whilst working in one of Scotland’s prisons, I was responsible for running and delivering a Creative Writing Class. In the class the students would work on solo writing projects as well as a class project, giving that I was a new tutor for them, I offered the option of writing and recording a radio play together, the class worked super hard on something new to them and went on to win a group award from Koestler. The radio play was a huge success in building their confidence and group relationship. Koestler is an arts award agency for those in custody, hospitals and secure units.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custodial Settings - WHERE I DO MY GROWING.</image:title>
<image:caption>Where I Do My Growing was a week long arts residency in HMP Cornton Vale. I worked with the Garden Work Party within HMP Cornton Vale, as an artist to engage them on a devising process. Throughout the week we shared time together, me helping them with their garden work duties and them collaborating with me to create a show using the theme of growth, and more poignantly growth within prison and themselves. During the week I was fortunate to work with the participants through gardening keeping the literal within the metaphorical but to also watch them flourish as performers and to become more confident, articulate and creative individuals. This residency was set up as part of my degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland studying the Arts In Criminal Justice module.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Privilege was theatre production created and devised by the Women’s Creative Company in Glasgow. As the assistant director of the piece, I found it very moving, political and empowering. Privilege examined the world we live in, who has privilege? <image:title>Feminist Theatre - If I Could…</image:title>
<image:caption>If I Could… was a seven hour long durational performance for the Into The New Festival at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2017. I performed the durational alongside my Gran. Every Sunday whilst I was at uni, I would travel back home to Fife and visit my Gran, the distance from her house to the train station where I would leave for uni again always felt the longest part of the journey. In this performance I walked the distance it took to go from her house to the train station whilst carrying my Grans weight in coal, 76kg, on my back. Phoning my Gran on the hour every hour throughout the performance for everyone to hear her champion me on and for me to ask her advice on lifes wonders, trying to forge my own path as a woman she and I would be proud of. This performance was incredibly special to me and a highlight of my career.</image:caption>

<image:title>Feminist Theatre - No Regrets</image:title>
<image:caption>No Regrets was a collaborative feminist performance between myself and performance artist Marie & Tammy. Our enquiry was, what does it mean to dismantle sexualised feminist tropes and how do we stay authentic to ourselves as three different women but more importantly what unites us. Our performance was a raw and tender examination of female relationships and what pits women against each other as well as what then brings us back to each other.</image:caption>

<image:title>Theatre in Education - Project Neverland The Royal Lyceum Theatre - Edinburgh</image:title>
<image:caption>Project Neverland is a schools and community outreach programme that runs out of the creative learning department at The Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, based on their main stage Christmas show which was Wendy and Peter Pan by Ella Hickson. I was brought in as facilitator to run one of the school strands. I worked out of Pilrig Park in Edinburgh which is an additional supports needs school, therefore the project quickly became about sensory theatre and how the senses respond to various theatre art elements such as lights, sounds, textures, text and even smells. The project culminated in performance with the school students going on fabulous and wild adventures to the blue lagoon where they met all kinds of characters and had the most wonderful picnic as well as a display of the sensory art works they created.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Discover was a school outreach programme delivered by Creative Learning at The Royal Lyceum. Intially I became part of this project as an assistant I was then asked to take over the whole project. Becoming project manager and delivering the programme was a great opportunity and we successfully ran across three centres Venchie Arts in Niddrie, Craig Royston High school and Whale Arts Centre in Wester Hailes engaging with young people from primary 4 up to 6th year of High School. Throughout the project the young people took part in various drama workshops and weekly classes, they also were taken on trips to the Lyceum. The biggest highlight was that each group put on their own productions in which industry professionals were invited along to, as well as their family and friends.</image:caption>
